This is my first novel to read by L.J. Shen, and I can say without doubt, it will not be my last!

I just have no idea what it is with brooding and broken musicians and artists, but they kill me every time. I really think it’s their combined passion and courage to open their hearts and express their feelings through their soulful lyrics in front of possibly millions of fans. It leaves them completely vulnerable, and when they break? Their tragedy and pain are for the world to see. I definitely have a soft spot, because I swear this trope gets me every single time!

Alex and Indie were both so strong minded and stubborn. The major difference was that Indie was selfless and hopeful, while Alex had lost all hope for his happiness. He was incredibly numbed and trapped by his own success and the way it had defined him.

I ended up loving both of their characters in the story, but where I admired Indie for sacrificing everything to help her family, it wasn’t easy to love Alex in the beginning at all. He was bitter, broken, and just didn’t care anymore. Well, that was until he met Indie, and she was a complete game changer for Alex’s miserable life. He was SO horrible to her at first, and when I say this, I seriously mean it. However, Indie came to be his muse, someone he truly needed, and gave him hope for happiness. In Indie’s pursuit to survive working for Alex, she surprisingly broke through his hardened layers and found a completely different man.

Oh my goodness, the passion between Alex and Indie was so intense! It stemmed from almost a hatred for each other, to an off the charts desire, and ended in respect and love. The way in which Alex and Indie came together was somewhat unconventional for a romance, with such an extreme dislike for one another, and their journey was deeply emotional. In the end, Alex and Indie’s story was absolutely beautiful, and they really stole my heart!

Perfectly paced and flawlessly written, it was very suspenseful, keeping me glued to the pages. Being unfamiliar with Shen’s way of writing, I really had no idea where the story would take me and had this strange worry holding over me that something bad would happen to Alex like overdosing at some point, but you’ll just have to read it to find out!

Midnight Blue totally wrapped me up in the feels, and I absolutely loved it! I’ve also become a big fan of authors’ playlists for their books these days, and Shen’s playlist for this was fantastic. I really look forward to her other works, including more of this series, with Deep Purple coming late 2018!
