Never ask a question unless you’re sure you want the truth.

I’ve been listening to my father sing for my whole life. I carry him in my pocket on my mp3 player. It’s just that we’ve never met face to face.

My mother would never tell me how I came to be, or why my rock star father and I have never met. I thought it was her only secret. I was wrong.

When she dies, he finally appears. Suddenly I have a first class ticket into my father’s exclusive world. A world I don’t want any part of – not at this cost.

Only three things keep me going: my a cappella singing group, a swoony blue-eyed boy named Jake, and the burning questions in my soul. There’s a secret shame that comes from being an unwanted child. It drags me down, and puts distance between me and the boy I love.

My father is the only one alive who knows my history. I need the truth, even if it scares me.

www.dgbookblog.com:the.accidentals.sarina.bowen.2In this journey stemming from loss to finding how imperfections can turn into something wholly perfect, the honesty, understanding, and love found in The Accidentals was incredible!

I loved Rachel’s character, and my heart went out to her for being totally uprooted from life as she knew it. She was forced in a direction she had always longed for, yet under the worst circumstances possible. Of course, she had insecurities, but Rachel’s bravery in facing each unknown step was so admirable.

The transition from ‘Angry Rachel’ to a ‘Happy Rachel’ was not easy. She dealt with many feelings along the way with her grief from losing the all-encompassing love of her mother, understanding her father whom she had never even met and his absence in her life for seventeen years, as well as discerning the different types of love and friendships. It was heartbreaking yet uplifting to see Rachel blossom and grow through it all.

The story was told from Rachel’s point of view, but I definitely fell in love with all of the secondary characters in the story. Bowen does such a great job of incorporating unique qualities into both her characters and their relationships, and my favorite is the honesty that she gives them. In building their trust, each played such an important role in Rachel’s healing process.

‘His messages are like an escape hatch from my real life… And when I read his messages, I can almost believe that the earth is still turning around the sun, and that I’m really going to a fancy new school in the fall.’

Although this is not really a ‘sexy times’ story, Rachel’s relationship with Jake was sweet and romantic in a very special and refreshing way. They established such a strong bond based on their appreciation for each other’s quirky qualities and friendship. It was like Rachel and Jake spoke their own ‘nerdy’ language, which I really related to and enjoyed since I’m a bit like that myself.

Just the same, Rachel’s father Frederick, had a genuine honesty with her which actually helped bridge the gap between them, and their love of music and odd collection of negative words without positives gave them a lighter side to finding common ground. Rachel’s friend, Aurora, was the perfect type of friend she needed to help her come out of her shell, and my heart went out to her loyal friend Haze for giving her comfort through her mother’s death as well.

Sarina Bowen’s writing was orchestrated perfectly with its crescendo throughout the four parts of the story, which were all filled with emotion. Like the story, the cover was also beautiful and unique, and along with Bowen’s quaint touches and adorable characters, this made for an incredibly sweet and enjoyable read!

I had such a hard time putting this down, and I know I’m a bit greedy but really didn’t want to let go of this wonderful ‘accidental’ family. The best part? It was a beautiful new beginning!

‘But every fairy tale has a righteous ending, Rachel. It’s guaranteed.’

Loved it and highly recommend it!

  1. Ahhh wonderful review, hon! Yes and yes to all of it. I loved Frederick’s honesty so much. He was a fuck-up but he so wanted to be better for his daughter. And Rachel and Jake! So cute.
