The Matchmaker’s Playbook by Rachel Van Dyken is a fun and flirty romance, but boy, did I have a strange reading experience with this one!

aboutthebook

Wingman rule number one: don’t fall for a client.

After a career-ending accident, former NFL recruit Ian Hunter is back on campus—and he’s ready to get his new game on. As one of the masterminds behind Wingmen, Inc., a successful and secretive word-of-mouth dating service, he’s putting his extensive skills with women to work for the lovelorn. But when Blake Olson requests the services of Wingmen, Inc., Ian may have landed his most hopeless client yet.

From her frumpy athletic gear to her unfortunate choice of footwear, Blake is going to need a miracle if she wants to land her crush. At least with a professional matchmaker by her side she has a fighting chance. Ian knows that his advice and a makeover can turn Blake into another successful match. But as Blake begins the transformation from hot mess to smokin’ hot, Ian realizes he’s in danger of breaking his cardinal rule…

MyReview

www.dgbookblog.com:the.matchmakers.playbook.rachel.van.dyken.coverI’ve been trucking through my ‘to be read’ stack lately and recently landed on The Matchmaker’s Playbook by Rachel Van Dyken. She’s a new author to me, and I know that many people love both her writing and this story, so I was really looking forward to reading it. The problem? I read the Kindle in Motion version on Amazon since it’s part of my Kindle Unlimited package. I thought it was a rather clever idea, because who doesn’t like pictures in their books? Believe it or not, I didn’t enjoy the experience at all.

It totally took away from the story for me, and how do I put this? It really ‘cheesed’ it up. It seemed too silly, and Ian and Blake didn’t look what I had in mind for their characters. I wasn’t even sure that I liked it, and my thoughts on how to rate it sat pretty low.

Now, the movie adaptation on Passionflix? This made story even better, and Nick Bateman and Caitlin Carver had a great performance! It was fun and flirty, but there was more passion to it that made it seem like a more solid romance.

This is actually a cute story. The plot was unique, and the characters were likable for sure. I enjoyed Blake’s saucy personality and the way her confidence grew throughout. Ian kept me laughing with all of his advice and adversity to scrunchies and hatred for Blake wearing Adidas flip-flops. The story was told from Ian’s cocky point of view, and little did he know that he didn’t really know everything like he thought he did! I also enjoyed the secondary characters and all of their banter in the story as well.

I know I’m in the minority of people who didn’t enjoy this read. Maybe I just started on the wrong foot with the Kindle in Motion edition and would have enjoyed it more if I had simply read a regular edition instead. So, how do I rate it? I guess I’ll go with an average of the two.
