The boy next door is now the man of her dreams…
Only Ever You, an all-new romantic standalone from New York Times bestselling author CD Reiss is now available!
Rachel knew exactly what turning thirty would be like. She had a plan, after all. First college, then a climb up the professional ladder. Love, marriage, children. All of it was on the schedule.
The cheap Hollywood apartment wasn’t on the list. Neither were the string of heartbreaks. Or her the effect her mother’s cancer had on her career.
It’s hard to stay practical and on-point when everything takes a left turn.
Enter Sebastian, the nerd across the street. The boy she defended when he couldn’t defend himself. The best friend she promised she’d marry if life didn’t go according to plan.
Not only is he successful, confident, and gorgeous, he still has their handwritten marriage contract.
No one goes through with childhood wedding pacts.
That’s crazy.
But their families might just be crazy enough to rent a hall and set a date. All Rachel and Sebastian have to do is fall in love.
CD Reiss’s unique and complex stories combined with her edgy writing style always make for all-consuming reads for me. I enjoy the diversity of her plots which vary from sports to suspense to Hollywood romances, and she always keeps me guessing at whether they will be more light-hearted or on the dark and angsty side. Only Ever You is a slow-burning and sweet friends-to-lovers romance, but overall the story just didn’t come together as I had hoped.
I really liked Sebastian and loved how his character had matured during his and Rachel’s years apart and definitely could sympathize with her frustration with all of the blows in her relationships, career path, and fear resulting from her mother’s illness. Their childhood friendship which resulted in the close-knit relationship between Rachel and Sebastian’s families was very special, and I adored Sebastian’s kooky mother, sister, and Rachel’s parents!
While I thought Sebastian’s devotion and willingness to help Rachel was very sweet, I just didn’t really feel their passion and chemistry together with their marriage of convenience. It was if they went through all of the motions in planning the wedding, but the focus of the story was more about Rachel finding her way. It took most of the story for her to realize that she and Sebastian could have more than a platonic relationship, and the little snippets throughout didn’t allow me to really feel their romantic connection.
The plot was rather witty and interesting with Rachel being known for not being a ‘romantic’ person yet being forced into that genre as a writer for the show ‘Romancelandia’. The title and premise were fantastic, but the story didn’t really come to fruition for me. I had a very hard time getting into it and staying engaged throughout, and the writing felt scattered and often left me backtracking and trying to follow who was speaking in the story at times.
I really think that Reiss is a brilliant writer, and I love how she challenges her heroes and heroines in her sometimes very twisted tales but also always includes so much passion, steam, and sweetness. While Only Ever You didn’t win me over as a whole, I do look forward to what she will write next!

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.
If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

So this one was lacking passion overall? I have it on my Kindle waiting to be read.
Great review! I was curious about this one, but I do need connection/chemistry to truly enjoy a story. Might need to read more reviews…
Thank you! Look into them, it seems a lot of people enjoyed it. I hate it when I’m in the minority but have always loved her books. I also think she has a harder time writing the simply sweet and not so racey romances. 🤷♀️
I’ve collected a few of the author’s books but haven’t read them yet. Sorry the romance here left you wanting but it does seem you enjoyed the story. Thanks for an insightful review, DG.
