DaisyGal’s Review:
‘Commander in Chief’ is the the highly anticipated follow up to ‘Mr. President’, which totally left me on the edge of my seat and eager to know what was next for the newly elected President Hamilton and his relationship with Charlotte. It was incredibly sweet, full of passion and warmth, and a lovely conclusion to this charming and very well written White House series!
Let’s start with the new Commander in Chief…
My gosh, Matthew Hamilton was pretty freaking awesome! Once he made his decision for Charlotte to remain a part of his life as acting First Lady during his Presidency, he had absolutely no reservations in his feelings for her either. Although supposedly keeping their relationship under wraps and only between them, Matthew simply had no doubts and could not hold back showing his adoration and love for Charlotte. When he asked her to dance with him at the gala and suprisingly kissed her in front of everyone, it was just totally swoon-worthy! His steadfast determination was very touching, and it was also very refreshing to see a man of such power as the POTUS maintain and focus on both his career and goals for the country yet also follow his heart with such confidence. I definitely admired that he always protected and put Charlotte and his family first!
‘I’m in over my head for this girl. Once I thought I couldn’t do both, govern a broken country and have her. But I know now that I will die trying to do both. This is who I am. I’m the president and a man. She’s the girl I love and the woman I want to spend my life with.
Really, it can be as simple as that.’
I also really enjoyed watching Charlotte grow in her courage and strength as she transitioned into her new role as the acting First Lady and eventually Mrs. Hamilton. Initially, she was so worried in how the nation would accept her as Matthew’s girlfriend and whether they would deem her worthy as their First Lady.
‘Except this dream is too big for me to fail at. I want to be a great first lady: I want to be a great woman deserving of a great man. The man I love.’
With Matthew’s belief and unyielding support and strength behind her, Charlotte finally began to realize all that she had to offer and really proved herself with her hard work and accomplishments. She was very mature and elegant, and I can really see how the country was drawn to her and easily accepted her for Matthew both professionally and personally.
The loyalty, strength, and passion was incredible between Matthew and Charlotte! I really loved how Matthew maintained his professional image as President, yet he still shared his true feelings and kept his fun and playful side with Charlotte. The dual POV really intensified their individual strength and feelings, and their love for each other enveloped me like a warm hug in seeing two people that were such a compliment to the other and in knowing they were completely meant to be together.
This was a very intriguing storyline, and I loved learning all about the inner workings of the White House and roles of being President and First Lady. It is all truly fascinating, and Evans did a fantastic job in conveying these details. I was a little surprised in how effortlessly all the previous book’s challenges that faced Matthew and Charlotte were resolved so quickly and very early on in the story. It resulted in the book seeming a little monotonous to me and moving along a little slowly to me at times. There were some surprises throughout the story which pulled me right back in, but this was certainly not near as angsty or as suspenseful as the first book seemed.
I really enjoyed this read, and this truly was a great series. The passion that Evans creates within her characters combined with her eloquence with her words in her writing is captivating. This was incredibly sweet and a beautiful conclusion to Matthew and Charlotte’s love story, and I highly recommend this series!
