~ The Guy on the Left by Kate Stewart (The Underdogs #2) ~

Release Date ~ December 8, 2019

Contemporary Romance/Romantic Dramedy

~ Synopsis ~

It started with a lie. A night of blurred lines between a teacher and a student.

I wasn’t her student, yet it was the single most defining night of my life.

I’ve never been the man she thinks I am.

Most people have no idea about the life I’ve lived or the words that ring true when it comes to me—still waters run deep.

But you’d be hard-pressed to find a coed on the TGU campus who knows otherwise…because I’ve never corrected them.

The clock is ticking down, it’s Fourth and Inches with the ball inside the one-yard line and the focus is on me, The Guy on the Left. I’ve never felt like a football god, inside I’m…just Troy.

It’s time to set the record straight.

For my son, I‘ll find the strength.

In her eyes, I’m determined to gain redemption.

I will have them both, even if I have to take my eye off the ball.

* The Guy on the Left is a stand-alone novel in The Underdogs Series. This is Troy’s story.

I am just loving this Underdog Series, and in this second standalone, The Guy on the Left, Kate Stewart delivers a very heartfelt romance that is sure to wrap you up in all the feels!

Troy and Clarissa’s characters were very complex, and although they were flawed, their intentions in doing what was best for their adorable little boy, Dante, the true sunshine in this story, were very clear to see!

As a single parent, Clarissa’s character offered such love and sacrifice when it came to her son, and it would be impossible not to appreciate her protectiveness of Dante. I also understood her anger and resentment towards Troy, but the extremely misunderstood man really was AMAZING! He didn’t define himself as the natural superstar that he was on the football field but instead by his hard work and dedication. Troy’s determination in proving both his value to others and his worthiness of being Dante’s father were so admirable, and the extents that he went to in order to do so really pulled on all of my heartstrings!

One of the reasons why I love Kate Stewart’s writing is that she always provides the unexpected with depth and complexity to her stories, and she really put Troy and Clarissa through the wringer in this romance!

With their shared love for Dante and the steamy passion and chemistry between them, Troy and Clarissa were absolutely ideal, yet insecurities and trust kept them apart. While Troy’s selflessness and ability to forgive really shined and stole the show throughout, Clarissa’s unwillingness to give him a chance and keeping her son from his father almost villainized her in the story. However, it was like the combination of salty and sweet and provided the angst that kept me filled with hope as I turned page after page, and of course, true to Stewart’s talent, Clarissa won me over in the end!

I also want to mention that the well-developed secondary characters also brought a lightness to the story that I really enjoyed. Clarissa’s best friend Parker was hilarious with her inebriated reviewing, and I loved Troy’s mother with her honesty, unconditional love, and belief in her son. It was also great to see the characters from the previous standalone, and although these can be read separately, Stewart did a fantastic job of intermingling and filling in the blanks between the timelines of the stories.

The Guy on the Left really danced on all of my emotions, and this beautiful and heartwarming romance made for such an enjoyable read. As I’ve come to expect, Stewart did a wonderful job bringing Troy, Clarissa, and Dante’s story full circle and giving me the super sweet happily ever after that our rather tortured couple and new family deserved!

I highly recommend picking up The Underdogs Series, as you’re sure to fall in love with Theo in the first book, The Guy on the Right, and I’m also looking forward to the rest of Lance’s story in The Guy in the Middle coming in January 2020. You can read the first part of it in Fair Catch from the Team Player 2: A Sports Anthology which is available now!

  1. You totally nailed Clarissa’s character here. I had a hard time loving her because she was villainized. I both respected her and hated her at times. Kate Stewart did such a great job with this story. And you wrote such a nice review for it!
